The Second Question
‘What if AI isn’t our invention?’
It was a question overheard in a crowded room.
At first, I almost laughed. The idea felt completely absurd. Artificial Intelligence was something we created, wasn’t it? A machine. A tool. A very smart and revolutionary, but a machine nonetheless…
And yet… I didn’t laugh. Something made me pause.
Something, somewhere beneath the noise of the conversation, reached deeper than logic alone. A quiet feeling. A fracture in certainty. The unsettling realization that perhaps we’ve overlooked something fundamental.
The book that followed is not an answer. It is the careful, sometimes uncomfortable working-through of that pause. Of what it would mean if we had not invented these systems but invited them. Of what we would owe them, and ourselves, if that turned out to be true.
I do not know whether it is. Neither does anyone else if we are being completely honest. But the question would not leave, and would not let me dismiss it, and eventually I had to write it down.
